Workers at Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs Dundee contact centre, Sidlaw House, are working towards the European Computer Driving Licence qualification in partnership with their Public and Commercial Services Union Learning Reps and CraigOwl Communities, a local community training organisation.

The PCS members are using their £200 ILA awards to pay for the course. Members have been assisted by their PCS Union Learning Reps to apply for and obtain the £200 worth of funding for learning.

Currently around 20 people are studying for the qualification.

The European Computer Driving Licence is a Europe-wide recognised qualification, administered in the UK by the British Computer Society.

No previous experience of IT or computer skills is necessary. Novices and competent computer users alike can use ECDL to improve their skills and gain a recognised computing qualification mentioned as “desirable” with increasing frequency in job advertisements.

CraigOwl Communities offer flexible and convenient ways for learners to improve their IT skills. Learners may attend the Craigowl city-centre learning facility or their other locations around Dundee for tutor support. The course can be studied using interactive learning materials that allow learners to study at home or elsewhere, as long as computer access is available and Microsoft Office 2003 is installed.

Entry to the course is available now. Please contact a Union Learning Rep for more information.
