Winner Announced for First Sidlaw House Poetry Competition

The MOON fair shone in JUNE (see what we did there?) for Jim Macbain, winner of the first ever Sidlaw House Poetry Competition, for his work entitled “How, What, Why and Where”.

Seen here with PCS Learning Rep Chay Blyth, Jim received his prize, a £15 gift voucher, kindly donated by Andrew Colgan, and proudly announced he would be spending his winnings on pencils and scraps of paper to enable him to continue scratching away at his Art in the comfort of a draughty garret.

The Poetry Competition is the latest in a series of monthly events which ULRs at HMRC Sidlaw House are organising to engage the staff, promoting participation, learning and development opportunities available locally.

How, What ,Why and Where

A summer’s day, not long ago, a happy little boy is playing in his garden with a favourite little toy.

And as he plays he wonders why the sun and moon go round?

And why, although they come quite low, clouds never touch the ground?

And if the trees in winter are so very, very bare, how in summer do they get all the leaves up there?

And why does sand get in your teeth at picnics on the beach?

And why a little butterfly can stay just out of reach?

And how do all the little birds know where they left their nest?

And how a compass knows to point; north, east, south, or west?

And why does sunlight seem to dance on rivers passing by?

And why when you are happy do you sometimes want to cry?

And if you fly your kite so high, away up in the air, why does it not just fall to earth, why does it stay up there?

And when you’re in the middle of a noisy football game, how can you hear your mother gently calling out your name?

And when you get all muddy from jumping in a puddle, why does daddy get all mad and then give you a cuddle?

With questions, these and so much more, he fills his waking days and as he grows the answers come in many different ways.

So when a child asks you Why, What, When or Where?

Remember why they ask you and show them that you care.

For they will grow and drift away, their questions lessen everyday, but you will have the memories of the happy little boy who came to ask you questions on that long hot summer’s day
